How to Redeem American Airlines Miles: Introduction

This is an introduction to a series I want to start as a guide on how to redeem American Airlines miles. American Airlines AAdvantage miles are one of the easiest mileage programs to use. AAdvantage miles are also easy to earn through multiple credit cards from Citi Bank and Barclay Card. A great perk of AAdvantage miles the ability to earn and redeem on OneWorld alliance airlines and many other non-alliance airlines as well. AAdvantage also allows you to put an award booking on hold for a few days until you confirm your ticket. This is especially great if you don’t have the full amount of miles required yet or indecisive about a trip.
Earning American Airlines Miles:
- Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MasterCard. Earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage®bonus miles after spending $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.
- Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard. Earn 50,000 American Airlines Advantage®bonus miles after spending $5,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.
- AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite MasterCard. Earn 40,000 bonus miles when you make your first purchase in the first 90 days and pay the annual fee.
American Airlines Partner Airlines:
As I mentioned earlier, you can earn and redeem American Airlines miles on many partners. This is great since it gives you the opportunity to redeem your American Airlines miles for travel all around the world. Here American Airlines partners:

I will break up this section in future posts to discuss how to book awards to each major region of the world. In the meantime this is just a quick snapshot on which airlines you can book online using American Airlines miles and which you have to call in to book.
Airlines bookable on AA.com:
- airberlin
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- British Airways
- Finnair
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Qantas Airways
- Royal Jordanian Airlines
To book all other partner airlines, you have to call American Airlines at 800-882-8880 and provide flight numbers, dates and class to the agent.
