American Express Announces Aer Lingus as Newest Airline Partner for Membership Rewards

Today American Express and Aer Lingus, Ireland’s only four star airline, announced that Card Members enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program can soon transfer Membership Rewards® points to Avios with AerClub, the loyalty program of Aer Lingus, at a 1:1 ratio.

The Details:

  • The capability is rolling out in the U.S. at the end of this month (August 2018) and expanding in the U.K later in the year

  • Aer Lingus joins 16 other participating frequent flyer programs, including Delta, British Airways, and Emirates

  • Aer Lingus is the newest airline partner for Membership Rewards® since Etihad Guest was launched in 2016

About the Membership Rewards Program

American Express knows Card Members want more ways to earn and redeem Membership Rewards® points with top merchants around the world. As customers are at the center of everything American Express does, the company is constantly expanding the capabilities of one of its largest, strongest and most recognized assets, the Membership Rewards® program, in order to provide more value to Card Members.

Today the Membership Rewards program is in 21 countries worldwide and has:

  • The most points transfer travel partners of any major U.S. credit card loyalty program

  • The most airline point transfer partners in the U.S., with 15 at a 1:1 or better ratio.

Terms & Conditions

  1. Enrollment in AerClub, the loyalty program of Aer Lingus, is required.

  2. American Express is not responsible for availability of flight, accommodations, or any other rewards in the Aer Lingus program.

  3. Airline tickets are subject to availability. Check Award Seat availability before transferring points by visiting http://www.aerlingus.com/ or by calling 1-800-772-4642.

  4. Once you have transferred Membership Rewards® points, they cannot be transferred back to your Membership Rewards account and become subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Aer Lingus program, found at https://www.aerlingus.com/aerclub/about-aerclub/how-it-works/.

  5. Transfer enough points into your Aer Lingus account to redeem for your award seat.

  6. Transfers should be complete in 4 to 7 days.

  7. Please note that no booking can be made until the Avios are credited to your Aer Lingus account.

  8. Taxes, fees, charges and surcharges, including airline surcharges, may apply on Aer Lingus redemption flights and upgrades.

  9. All redemption bookings are subject to the terms and conditions of the Aer Lingus program.

Bottom Line:

When credit card companies add more transfer partners it’s generally a good thing. However, in this case, American Express adding Aer Lingus as a transfer partner is not super exciting. You can already transfer Membership Rewards points to British Airways which you can then transfer to Aer Lingus since they both use the Avios system. This just basically simplifies the process of transfering to Aer Lingus for those who were looking to do that.
