How to Transfer SPG StarPoints to Airlines?

Even tho Starpoints are hotel points, maximum value kicks in when you transfer SPG Starpoints to Airlines. Starwood has a plethora of airline transfer partners which makes it one of the most flexible currencies. However, that doesn’t mean that all transfer partners are useful. I think only a few of these partners are useful to the normal traveler.

Things to keep in mind when you transfer SPG StarPoints to airlines:

• Starwood Preferred Guests can transfer up to 79,999 of their Starpoints® per transaction per program within a 24-hour period. Plus, for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, Starwood will automatically add another 5,000 Starpoints! This means that up to 94,999 Starpoints can be transferred into your frequent flyer account, with most airline partners, making a free flight that much closer. Please keep in mind that only one airline transfer transaction per member, per airline program, is permitted within a 24-hour period. – I would recommend transferring only 60,000 Starpoints per 24hr period to maximize the 5,000 points bonus.

• There is no minimum Starpoint transfer requirement for Platinum members with most airlines. Gold members have a minimum transfer requirement of 1,500 Starpoints, and Preferred members have a minimum transfer requirement of 2,500 Starpoints.

• Transfer maximums are based on a combination of member Starpoints and the Starwood Preferred Guest airline transfer transaction bonus. Only one airline transfer transaction per member per program per 24 hour period is allowed; multiple transfer transactions within the same 24 hour period will reject. Both the Starwood Preferred Guest and airline frequent flyer program accounts must have identical member names in order to complete this request; different names will cause the transfer to reject. Airline transfers are one-way, non-reversible, and non-refundable.”

How to Transfer SPG StarPoints to Airlines?

• Go to this link to start transferring points
• Scroll down and click on “Transfer Air Miles”
• Then click on “Transfer Starpoints to Air Miles”
• You’ll be asked to sign in to your Starwood account

• You’ll then be asked to choose which airline you want to transfer your points to, how many points you want to transfer and your account number.

• When you transfer in increments of 20,000 points, you’ll see the 5,000 bonus points for every 20,000 points transferred.

Bottom Line:

Starpoints are one of the most valuable reward programs points out there. They’re very powerful when redeeming for free nights at Starwood properties, as you can get a free night for only a few thousand points per night depending on the hotel category you’re booking. However, when you transfer SPG StarPoints to airlines you can get much more value per point. The 5,000 bonus points for every 20,000 points transferred is just the icing on the cake. Make sure to always transfer in increments of 20,000 points.
