Reminder: AMEX Decreasing Transfer Rate to Avios

Amex Membership Rewards points are one of the most lucrative rewards currencies out there due to the range of transfer partners they have.

Unfortunately, starting October 1st 2015, AMEX decreasing transfer rate to Avios from 1,000 : 1,000 to 250 : 200. The means the transfer ratio is cut by 20%.

Should you transfer some of your Member Rewards points to Avios now?

Since they are distance based points, British Avios are extremely handy when it comes to short haul travel. You can redeem Avios for travel on American and get great value on flights from New York JFK to Toronto YYZ for only 4,500 Avios each way in economy. You can also redeem them for flight from New York to Miami for only 7,500 each way in economy.

Bottom line:

If you have a redemption in mind using Avios in the coming few months then by all means transfer enough points to have you covered. If not, Amex used to run promotions on transfers to British Airways Avios which might bring up the transfer ratio to 1:1 again during a promotional period.
