This is the second leg of my trip on Cathay Pacific business class from Bangkok to New York which I booked several months in advance for only 55,000 American AAdvantage miles; 50,000 of which I earned from the sign-up bonus on my Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® card. Unfortunately, this price changed starting March 22nd after AAdvantage miles devaluation. I did a Cathay Pacific Business Class Review of my flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong on the A330 which was great.
Cathay Pacific 840
Hong Kong (HKG) – New York (JFK)
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300 ER
I was originally booked on the flight that leaves around 7pm from Hong Kong. However, Cathay Pacific usually releases business class award seats 24hr-72hrs before departure. Before I left Phuket earlier that morning, I checked British Airways website for availability and I found 2 seats available on the earlier flight. I called American Airlines while checking out of the hotel and they were able to put me on the earlier flight pretty quickly. This left us about 45mins to connect from our Bangkok flight to our New York flight, we had to sprint between the two gates at HKG airport and we made it right on time to board!
Cathay Pacific Business Class 777-300ER Cabin
This aircraft had a four cabin configuration – first class, business class, premium economy, and economy class. Cathay Pacific business class cabin on the 777-300ER is very similar to the one the A330. The seats are a bit wider and the cabin feels roomier since the 777-300ER is wider aircraft than the A330. Business class consists of 53 flat bed seats that are 21.0 inches wide and have a pitch of 81 inches and are arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone configuration.
Cathay Pacific business class seats are private enough if you’re traveling alone and are close enough if you’re traveling with a companion – you’ll have to lean forward in order to have a conversation with your seatmate. Next time I might consider two window seats behind each other. There’s plenty of leg room All the controls were to my left- entertainment controls, seat controls, reading light and a universal power outlet and a USB port (and A/V input!?). Next to the controls is a small storage compartment for the headphones and a mirror on the compartment door. The entertainment screen folds out with a push of a button
There was a pillow and a very plush blanket waiting at every seat as we boarded.
A few minutes after boarding we were offered and amenity kit that contained Jurlique lip balm, hand cream and balancing day cream. It also contained eye mask, pair of socks, tooth brush, tooth paste and mouth wash.
Cathay Pacific Business Class Food and Beverage
A few minutes after settling in my seat, flight attendants came around with hot towels and pre-departure drinks which I didn’t partake in. After that they distributed the menus for the flight.
Soon after take off I asked for Gold Label whiskey which was served with some warm nutsFood service started quickly after that. I chose the braised pork rib for my entree which was very flavorful that I forgot to take a picture of it!!
For dessert, I got the Bleu d’Auvergne, Red Leicester, Taleggio crackers and cabernet paste which was interestingly delicious, and it came with fresh fruit.
A little after that I got the blueberry tart
After dinner service, flight attendants walked around passing bottles of water at which point I decided to get some sleep.
Upon waking up, I ordered the burger from the snack menu and the Oriental Breeze signature drink.
Cathay Pacific Business Class In-Flight Entertainment
Cathay Pacific has a decent size entertainment screen and a good selection of movies and shows. I watched two movies throughout the flight and the rest of the time I was either eating or sleeping.
I definitely enjoy any outside view camera.
Cathay Pacific Business Class Bottom Line:
Cathay Pacific has one of the most comfortable types of business class seating – the reverse herringbone. It is very functional and reasonably private. On the service side, the flight attendants were friendly, attentive and always addressed me by my name which adds a touch personability. I would gladly book this flight again with 70,000 AAdvantage miles (post devaluation) or 50,000 Alaska Airlines miles.
